After a whole day of work in front of a computer, you feel exhausted like you’ve been running a full marathon? Why do you feel tired when you have not been doing any physical activity?

There are a couple of reasons for this.

You feel mental exhaustion. Maybe throughout the day you haven’t been active with your body muscles, but your brain has. The brain is relatively small when compared to the rest of the body, but uses a significant amount of oxygen – up to 20%

“When the muscles are not been “stretched” they are not using much oxygen. Of course when you exercise they do use much more oxygen. But, the brain always uses much energy – says D-r Steven Feinsilver from New York hospital Lenox Hill.

This is why you feel tired after spending the whole day in front of a computer. If you have spent your whole day in front of the computer, chances are you have lost focus at certain moments and the work has become boring.

If this is the case, it’s highly probable that you have used these moments to check what’s new on social networks or media, as this will be much more fun.

The conflict between what you want to do and what you should be working on, can cause tension that will result in fatigue. A psychology professor from the university in Toronto, has conducted a study in which 159 participants took part. Throughout the study, the participants have been taking notes on what has been their biggest challenge, how they practiced self-control and has that made them feel tired.

A lot of data suggested that many of the participants have been going online on twitter, facebook, Instagram during working hours, which gave the temptation to do something else and not concentrate on the actual work. This in turn made the workers less motivated and consequently more tired.

Why is this?

You are under stress

Work is a very common source for stress. Some types of stress are good, but chronic stress can make us feel very tired and affect the quality of our life. It’s very important you find ways to fight stress. You can try breathing exercises, walking or meditation. Although these are only short-term solutions, it’s very important you find what works best for you and reduce the stress during the day.

You don’t get enough sleep

One of the main reasons why you feel tired after a whole day of work is because you haven’t gotten enough sleep during the night. If this was the case, you won’t be able to concentrate and focus on the work. An interesting fact is that too much sleep can also make you feel tired through the day. According to data from the American National Sleep Foundation, adults need 7-9 hours of sleep during the night. It’s very normal for you to feel tired at 2 a.m. in the morning and around 2 p.m. in the afternoon. Roughly 29% of the participants suggested they felt sleepy during the day (some of the nod off). This decreased productivity of employees costs the American companies 63 billion dollars yearly.
